From Brynn, Founder of Adair Beauty

I’m an artist at heart. I grew up painting watercolor lilies with my grandma and learning to draw from my mom. In high school I fell in love with portraits, recreating my favorite celebrities with oil paint. All this artistic training came in handy at age 17, the time for winter formals and proms.

I realized that makeup artistry was not far from the art of oil portraits I had been practicing. I bought a book by Kevyn Aucoin called Making Faces, which is full of tutorials of every makeup look possible. The coveted smoky eye – the feminine doll – the natural look. With my sisters as my guinea pigs I practiced every look in Making Faces (my favorite was the smoky eye modeled by Jewel). When prom rolled around I was ready for action, making all of my friends beautiful.

When I moved to Minneapolis to attend college I searched for a part time job. I dreamed of one job only – Beauty Consultant at Nordstrom. Well, I didn’t get hired at Nordstrom, but eventually Marshall Field’s let me represent their Lancome line – which is still one of my favorites. I also worked for Bare Escentuals, Clinique, and Laura Mercier. Through college I also attended training seminars including one by the renowned Christian McNally. By senior year of college, I had worked with many women, from acne suffering teens to mature women with aging skin. I felt confident enough to set out on my own, starting Brynn Andre Beauty.

My company started with a Craigslist ad, and an offer to provide wedding makeup. Today, I have a website, a business and a summer rapidly booking out. I have Countless inspiring weddings under my belt and a portfolio of beautiful shots of my work. I feel proud, and I am ready to do more.

Why the name change?

We were formerly called Brynn Andre Beauty and now are Adair Beauty. I’m excited about the new name and direction that we’re headed. I’ve been so lucky with my success so far. The company is expanding and I no longer want it to be seen as my company. I want Adair Beauty to be a new brand, not about me but about the bride. Plus, I’m not much for attention, so having Brynn Andre Beauty always felt a little uncomfortable. Next, I’ve got new talent by my side this year – hair and makeup artists that are talented and fun. The Adair Beauty stylists are all people I would love to have by my side the morning of my wedding.

This feels expensive! Why are your services priced this way?

I know, believe me, I’ve struggled with pricing my services. Coming from North Dakota with a frugal sensibility I have a hard time parting with my money. But I feel I’ve priced my services reasonably. Here’s why:

I am invested – once a bride and I sign a contract, a relationship is formed and I assume responsibility for bringing her vision to life on her wedding day. I work hard to understand what “look” a bride envisions for her day. As a testament to my investment, I will do a trial run as many times as necessary, to get it right, for free. I’m a perfectionist for my work, just like you’re a perfectionist for your wedding. Plus, doing bridal makeup and hair is hands down the best job, so I get excited right along with you.

I am connected – Literally. I’m on my Blackberry, laptop and other devices all the time. I respond promptly to your questions, because I grew up in a digital age. I expect quick responses from others, so that’s what I give to brides.

I have experience – Not just the “good on paper” experience. Sure I’ve worked for HGTV, the Food Network, Metro Magazine and Minnesota Bride. BUT, most of my experience comes from my local Minneapolis clients like the women at the Lancome counter that needed help out of a makeup rut. Or the brides that know exactly what they want. I do makeup, all the time. Sometimes for big name clients, but more often for Midwestern brides.
